How Traveling Can Affect Your Period

Posted on December 14, 2021December 14, 2021 by admin

Traveling overseas throws off the internal body clock, called the circadian rhythm. And this rhythm influences essential bodily functions like hormone release. Consequently, traveling affects the levels of hormones like progesterone and estrogen, which play a vital role in the menstrual cycle and ovulation. Also, circadian rhythm disturbance can delay the estrogen spike that causes ovulation. Thus, your period could come later than usual the month you travel.

Travel Stress Can Affect Your Period

Travel stress can also disrupt your normal menstrual cycle. During stress, the body releases hormones that can harm your overall health. However, these hormones play a first and more evolutionary role when it comes to the menstrual cycle.

The hormonal balance in the body during stress can lead to late ovulation. For this reason, some women miss ovulation when stressed because stress signals that the body is in distress and, therefore, in an unsafe environment. And the body activates the mechanism for avoiding pregnancy by delaying the period.

Not every trip is stress-free. For instance, you can enjoy your time away but sleep little and drink excessively. Thus, your body will be stressed, and estrogen production won’t function normally.

Exercise Routine and Dietary Changes

Most people don’t go for their routine morning jog when traveling. They also stick to a lean diet during vacation. Also, some travelers binge on treats from locals and enjoy sweet cocktails. Additionally, they stay awake for long hours at night. Some even wake up late after spending a lot of time having fun with the locals. Abandoning healthy routines during leisure vacations can add up to body stress. And this can eventually affect the menstrual cycle.

Jet Lag Can Affect Your Menstrual Cycle

Traveling can disrupt your sleep cycle, making your menstrual cycle fall out of order. Switching from one time zone to another makes the circadian rhythm lose balance. And this affects the hormonal balance, changing the natural bio-rhythm and menstrual period.

The menstrual cycle is sensitive to any stress. Whether you’re flying or using a train, traveling can bring general tension and stress. And this can affect your period, whether you travel for a fortnight or days.
